Observation Narrative
Rich montane oak-hickory forest with dense, diverse herb layer. Stature of trees limited by chronic wind and short growing season. This plot represents a variant on the oak-hickory community of felsic bedrock on the northern Blue Ridge with Carya ovata and C. cordiformis instead of C. ovalis. Despite the presence of Stachys subcordata, this stand appears a closer fit to the Quercus rubra - Carya ovalis / Collinsonia canadensis - Impatiens pallida Forest than to the Quercus rubra - Carya ovata / Dennstaedtia punctilobula - Eupatorium purpureum - (Stachys subcordata) Forest of the Pedlar District, but analysis is warranted.
Plot location was selected in the field by DNH Ecologists.
Directions to plot:
From Terrapin Mountain Overlook (around mile marker 76.4) proceed north along BRP ca. 200 m and enter woods on right. Tagged tree (Quercus rubra, 78 cm dbh, tag #425;204 degrees and 5 m from tree is conduit) located ca. 100 m south of Appalachian Trail.
